More about the way you earn Aeroplan points with Air Canada
To help you navigate the changes, we've created a dedicated section with detailed questions and answers.
Throughout this page, the term "flight" refers specifically to eligible flights as described below.
Starting in 2026, we’re changing the way members will earn Aeroplan points when flying with Air Canada. Members will earn 1 point per $1 spent, including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges.
Aeroplan Elite Status Members will enjoy a new Elite Points Multiplier as a Core Benefit, earning up to 6x the Aeroplan points per $1 spent. The Elite Points Multiplier is based on a member’s status at time of travel.
For flights departing on or before December 31, 2025, Aeroplan points will be earned as today, based on distance and fare option.
For flights departing on or after January 1, 2026: Aeroplan points will be earned on the amount you spend on your Air Canada ticket, including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges.
All Aeroplan Members will earn a base amount of one Aeroplan point per dollar spent on base fare and carrier surcharges on their eligible flights, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges. As a Core Benefit, Aeroplan Elite Status Members will also accumulate with the Elite Points Multiplier on flights based on their Aeroplan Elite Status at the time of travel and the flight’s operating carrier.
Aeroplan Elite Status Members will earn with the Elite Points Multiplier on eligible Air Canada flights and eligible flights ticketed by Air Canada (ticket number starting with 014) and operated by all other Star Alliance Member airlines.

Yes - we will still be offering bonus point promotions for flying Air Canada. Later this year, promotions will be visible right during flight searches, making it easy to take advantage of them.
Yes – for travel on or after January 1, 2026, how you earn points will vary based on the operating carrier of your flight and the airline who issued your ticket:
- For Air Canada operated flights, regardless of the airline issuing your ticket, or how the flight is booked, you will earn Aeroplan points based on what you spend on your flight, including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges.
- For tickets issued by Air Canada (ticket number starting with 014), and flights operated by any of our partner airlines, you will earn Aeroplan points based on what you spend on your flight, including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges.
- For flights operated by Aeroplan partner airlines and ticketed by another airline (ticket number not starting with 014), you will continue to earn Aeroplan points based on the distance you fly, with the exception of flights on Helijet - see partner details.
Like today, your flight needs to be eligible for accumulation to earn Aeroplan points. Certain tickets are not eligible for earning points. These include, but are not limited to:
- Refunded, void, or unused tickets, including unused non-refundable tickets;
- Reward travel tickets or free promotional tickets;
- Travel agency/industry reduced rate tickets;
- Tour conductors, companion tickets, and infant tickets (under age two);
- Tickets purchased to carry excess baggage or special baggage such as musical instruments or to provide extra space for the primary passenger;
- Single entity charter flights, unless otherwise specified;
- Tickets issued on fares with rules that exclude the earning of Aeroplan points.
Aeroplan will reward you based on how you engage overall, not just how far (or how often) you fly. There are different ways to earn more points for your travel:
- As the points earned are based on how much you spend, choosing to purchase a higher fare option such as Latitude will earn more points than choosing Standard, for instance;
- Take advantage of bonus point promotions;
- Repeatedly and frequently choose to fly with us;
- Earn extra Aeroplan points with accelerated earn rates on Air Canada® purchases with an Aeroplan credit card.
Like today, Aeroplan points will be deposited into your account after the completion of each flight you take.
If your ticket includes several flights, the total amount you spent including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges will be divided proportionally based on the distance of each flight. This way, each part of your trip is fairly counted towards your points earn.
The points for your flight that departs in 2025 will be calculated based on the distance you fly, while the points for your flight in 2026 will be calculated based on the dollars you spent, including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges for that flight. This ensures that each segment of your journey is rewarded according to the rules in place at the time of departure.
Yes, you will. We will convert the ticket purchase amount to Canadian dollars using an industry-standard exchange rate and then calculate the number of points you will earn based on that amount, including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges.
You will not earn Aeroplan points on ancillary products and fees, such as additional checked baggage or seating assignments, above the cost of your flights. For clarity – if you purchase a Flex fare for $500 and it includes one complimentary checked bag, you will receive points based on $500 for this flight. However, you will not earn additional Aeroplan points on fees paid for additional checked baggage above your ticketed allotment.
To earn Aeroplan points, each passenger needs to be an Aeroplan Member and have their Aeroplan number appended to their booking, allowing each passenger to earn points based on the cost of their own individual ticket. The passenger's information in their reservation must match the information in the passenger's Aeroplan Member profile in order to earn Aeroplan points. Points are awarded to each traveller on a booking, regardless of who purchased the ticket.
The operating carrier is the airline that actually flies the plane. You can purchase flights operated by another airline on the Air Canada website. In the majority of cases, the operating carrier refers to the airline name on the plane, not the name on your ticket or boarding pass.
All tickets bought through Air Canada channels are automatically issued with an Air Canada ticket number beginning with "014".
If the original flight was planned for 2025 and the new flight is in 2026, you will earn Aeroplan points according to the new earn structure in place for 2026.
If you voluntarily exchange a ticket for different flights, you will earn points based on the cost of your new flights. If the fare of the new flight increases or decreases, the Aeroplan points you earn will be calculated based on the new fare, including base fare and carrier surcharges, excluding applicable taxes, fees, and third-party charges.
If Air Canada or another airline changes a flight on your ticket, Air Canada will honour the earning of the points for the flights as originally planned.
As this involuntary downgrade will result in a credit adjustment, this will also be reflected in the points earned.
Yes, Aeroplan points will be earned if you (fully or partially) pay for your flights with funds from your AC-Wallet, provided that these flights are eligible to earn Aeroplan points.
Like today, any flight you book with Aeroplan points or a combination of points and cash, are not eligible for accumulation
As of January 1, 2026, you will earn a fixed amount of Aeroplan points for the Air Canada Vacations packages which will depend on the region you are travelling to and the Air Canada cabin you booked. This fixed amount of Aeroplan points will be deposited into each member’s account following the last flight of the entire package journey.
For Air Canada Vacations packages, the Aeroplan points will be awarded as one crediting activity for the entire Air Canada Vacations package.
| Region | Aeroplan points earned | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | Premium Economy | Business or Premium Rouge | |
| Americas | 500 | 600 | 1,000 |
| Atlantic | 700 | 1,500 | 3,000 |
| Pacific | 1,500 | 3,000 | 5,000 |
Americas: North America (Canada, United States (incl. Hawaii), & Mexico and all countries in the Caribbean, in Central America and in South America).
Atlantic: All countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
Pacific: All countries in Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Yes, as an Aeroplan Elite Status Member, you will also enjoy the Elite Points Multiplier on Air Canada Vacations packages. The multiplier will only apply to the points earned based on the region you are travelling to and the cabin you’re flying in. Should Air Canada Vacations offer additional Aeroplan points for the same package, such Aeroplan points will not be included in the Elite Points Multiplier unless otherwise indicated.
The points for your flight that departs in 2025 will be calculated based on the distance you fly, while the points for your flight in 2026 will be calculated based on the region you are traveling to and the cabin you are flying in, as outlined above. This ensures that each segment of your journey is rewarded according to the rules in place at the time of departure.
There are certain types of flights that are booked with specialty fares. In these cases, you will earn Aeroplan points based on a new distance-based structure. This structure is designed to be simple and applies only to these types of fares. You will earn points based on the distance travelled, multiplied by a percentage depending on the cabin you book. These specialty fares include, but are not limited to, unpublished, bulk, group, and tour tickets.
| Cabin | % of Distance |
|---|---|
| Economy | 15% |
| Premium Economy | 20% |
| Business | 30% |
If you book a ticket using a Limited-Credit Flight Pass, the price of the pass will be distributed equally across all your flight credits, and you will earn Aeroplan points for each flight individually. However, while the sales taxes are paid upfront at the time of purchase, other fees—such as government-imposed taxes and airport fees—are only calculated when you book a flight using your credits. These fees vary depending on the specific flight and route you choose, which means the exact dollar value attributed to the base fare and carrier-surcharges will be determined at the time of booking. As a result, the exact number of Aeroplan points you earn will also depend on the flight(s) you select.
If you travel in 2025, your earn will be based on the distance you fly; if you travel in 2026, your Aeroplan points will be based on how much you spend on the Limited-Credit Flight Pass. The Aeroplan points will be deposited into your account after the completion of the flight.
For an Unlimited Flight Pass, you'll earn Aeroplan points based on the pre-tax amount of your monthly installment.
Please note there are no additional Aeroplan Base points, Status Qualifying Credits (SQC), Lifetime Qualifying Miles (LQM) or Every Day Qualification points (EDQ) credited for individual flight activities booked with an Unlimited Flight Pass.
