Want to know more about Bid Upgrades? We’ve got answers to some common questions about eligibility, how to make, cancel or modify an offer, and much more.
- Applicability. The following terms and conditions ("Terms and Conditions") shall apply to any bid submitted under the AC Bid Upgrade Program ("Offer"), including purchase made through the Instant Upgrades option, by you (“you”) to Air Canada for an opportunity to upgrade from the class of service originally purchased by you for travel with Air Canada to a minimum of one class of service higher (“Upgrade”), as determined by the cabin hierarchy applicable to the aircraft operated on the flight.
- Eligibility. In order to submit an Offer, you must: (i) have reached the legal age of majority in your country of residence at the time the Offer is submitted; and (ii) have purchased a reservation on a scheduled flight operated by Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge, or under the Air Canada Express brand that is eligible for an Upgrade. You shall be deemed to have the authority to act on behalf of and to bind the passenger(s) named or included in the Offer. For details on how to submit an Offer, please visit the FAQ section.
- Eligible Flights. An Offer can only be made on select flights operated by Air Canada or Air Canada Rouge, or under the Air Canada Express brand and in select countries as determined by Air Canada in its sole discretion. To determine if your flight is eligible for an Upgrade, please visit the FAQ section.
- Signature Plus Seat Exclusion. Passengers who receive an Upgrade through the AC Bid Upgrade program, the Instant Upgrade (Last Minute Upgrade) option, or eUpgrade credits are not eligible to select or purchase a Signature Plus seat. Signature Plus seats are subject to separate terms and conditions and availability, and no refund, credit, or compensation shall be owed in connection with the unavailability of such seats to upgraded passengers.
- Offer Entitlement. An Offer submitted by you in association with a reservation made with Air Canada, whether directly or through a third party such as a travel agent, shall entitle the passenger(s) named on the Offer, subject to these Terms and Conditions, to be considered for an Upgrade.
- Acceptance at Air Canada's Discretion. Air Canada is under no obligation to accept any Offers, and it makes no representation that any passenger will be upgraded. The acceptance of an Offer is at the sole discretion of Air Canada.
- Submission and Acceptance of Offers.
- Once you submit an Offer, your Offer remains open for acceptance by Air Canada at any time up to forty-eight (48) hours prior to the scheduled flight departure time, unless otherwise specified under the Instant Upgrade option. Prior to acceptance by Air Canada, you may revise or cancel your Offer at any time. However, once Air Canada has accepted your Offer, you are bound to purchase the Upgrade and to pay the amount stated in your Offer (either through a charge to your credit card or through the debit of Aeroplan points from your Aeroplan account, as applicable) (each, a "Payment Method"). Following acceptance, you will not be entitled to withdraw your Offer, except to the extent otherwise permitted in these Terms and Conditions.
- If you opt for the Instant Upgrade option, you agree that your Offer remains open for acceptance by Air Canada for a period of two (2) hours. During this period, you are not entitled to withdraw your Offer, except as otherwise permitted in these Terms and Conditions. If your Offer is accepted, you are bound to purchase the Upgrade and to pay the amount stated in your Offer through the applicable Payment Method.
- Flight Cancellation and Re-accommodation. If Air Canada cancels a flight and re-accommodates you on another flight: (a) any pending Offer made by you in relation to the original booking will be cancelled by Air Canada; and (b) if your Offer was previously accepted, Air Canada will use reasonable commercial efforts to transfer your Upgrade to the new flight(s), subject to the availability of seats in the higher class of service or the availability of such higher class of service cabin. The Offer is non-transferable to another person. If, for any reason, there are not enough seats available in the higher class of service to fulfill your accepted Offer, Air Canada will refund the Upgrade amount to the original Payment Method used to pay for the Upgrade. In either case, Air Canada shall have no further liability to you.
- Changes to Flight Reservations. If, following acceptance of your Offer, you change your flight reservation, Air Canada shall have no obligation to seat you in the upgraded class of service on the changed flight, unless you pay for the Upgrade in accordance with Air Canada’s standard change policies and the policies and conditions associated with the fare class of your original ticket. For greater certainty: (a) you will not be entitled to a refund of any amounts paid for the Upgrade; and (b) the Upgrade entitlement may not be transferred to another flight or to another passenger.
- Payment upon Acceptance. In the event Air Canada accepts your Offer, the full amount of your Offer will be charged to the applicable Payment Method immediately upon acceptance, and Air Canada will issue an Upgrade to each passenger included in your Offer. The total amount charged will include all applicable taxes and fees (if any) for the Upgrade. An Upgrade that has been accepted by Air Canada cannot be assigned, or transferred by you, in whole or in part to another person or flight.
- Refunds. There will be no refunds, credits, or exchanges once your Offer has been accepted by Air Canada, except under the following conditions:
- Your Offer was accepted and the applicable Payment Method was charged, but (a) your flight was subsequently cancelled and Air Canada re-accommodated you on another flight in the class of service of your original booking, or (b) the Upgrade was not otherwise provided or received for reasons attributable to Air Canada and Air Canada did not accommodate you in a class of service higher than your original booking. In either case, you shall be entitled to a full refund of one hundred percent (100%) of the Offer amount to the original Payment Method, provided that the conditions for which refunds are given as described in these Terms and Conditions have been satisfied.
- Your Offer was accepted and you were given an Upgrade, but you were not able to be seated in the upgraded class of service for reasons attributable to Air Canada, including, but not limited to, a change in aircraft, a delay in the connecting flight that resulted in your missing the connection on which you were upgraded, but excluding reasons attributable to your actions. If, in such circumstances, Air Canada accommodates you on a class of service higher than your original booking but lower than the class of service associated with your accepted Upgrade, and you consent to such accommodation, then the refund to the original Payment Method or credit will be fifty percent (50%) of the Offer amount.
11.1. To apply for a refund, you must present the boarding pass for the flight for which you did not receive your Upgrade, and the email received by Air Canada notifying you that you have been upgraded, and you shall contact Air Canada through the Customer Service Center (if a credit card was used as the Payment Method) or the Aeroplan contact centre Canada, USA, and the Caribbean 1-800-361-5373 | United Kingdom 0800 756 3865 | All other areas 1-514-395-0300 (if Aeroplan Points were redeemed as the Payment Method).

Where the original Payment Method is a credit card, the refund will be processed in the currency in which the Upgrade amount was charged. Where a foreign exchange rate must be applied to complete a credit card refund, a generally accepted prevailing rate will be used as determined by Air Canada in its sole discretion, which rate may be adjusted to account for conversion and other charges that Air Canada may levy. In no event shall the amount refunded exceed the amount charged in the original currency for the Upgrade.
- Fare Conditions. The fare conditions for the original ticket you purchased shall remain in effect and will be applicable even if your Offer has been accepted with respect to cancellation policies, change fees, conditions for minimum and maximum stay, and rules relating to the accrual of frequent flyer. All other conditions will be per the upgraded fare class.
- Services and Amenities. Air Canada will use reasonable commercial efforts to ensure services typically available to a passenger booked in a higher cabin are also available to you, including specific seat assignments, priority check-in, priority baggage handling, priority boarding, onboard meals, and other amenities generally associated with the class of service to which you have been upgraded. However, Air Canada is unable to guarantee that all services typically available to passengers booked in the upgraded cabin class will be provided to the upgraded passenger. An Upgrade obtained through this bid upgrade process does not provide access to the Air Canada Signature Suite.
- Aeroplan Points Accrual. Aeroplan points may be accrued for eligible flights offered through the AC Bid Upgrade program. Aeroplan mileage accrual is calculated according to the booking class of the originally purchased ticket and not the upgraded class of service.
