We aim to Leave Less to minimize the environmental impact of our operations – less carbon in our atmosphere, and less waste in our land and water.
Reduce
Air Canada is working on adapting its corporate waste strategy that is based on circular economy principles. From reducing waste at the source to developing new strategies to keep resources in use for as long as possible, we are looking at finding creative and long-lasting solutions beyond simply diverting waste from the landfills.
Reuse
We’re proud to donate to community and charitable organizations whenever possible, which allows us to help those in need and reduce our waste footprint by giving out-of-service items a second life.
Recycle
We continually work to increase recycling throughout ground operations with the following initiatives.
Office waste centralization
We have implemented a centralized waste program at our Montréal headquarters, and in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto. We are continuing to roll out this program in our offices across Canada.
E-waste and battery recycling
Air Canada works to ensure e-waste and batteries are disposed properly with designated collection bins located across our facilities. Whenever possible, we also donate some used electronics such as monitors and computer accessories to nonprofit organizations and schools.
Single-use-plastics
Air Canada’s commitment to minimizing waste also includes significant plastic reduction efforts. This includes researching and rethinking important decisions made at various stages of our supply chain with the goal of minimizing our single-use plastic use.
Since 2018 Air Canada has been identifying options to eliminate, replace, and reduce our single-use plastic items onboard and continues to do so. Bamboo cutlery was made available system-wide on all Air Canada flights by the end of 2023 to comply with federal SUP regulations. Bamboo cutlery was available earlier in 2023 on flights departing Scotland, England, France, Australia, and India for Canada.
In addition, Air Canada’s Strategic Procurement department is integrated ESG considerations into the traditional procurement process to help support our corporate sustainability objectives.
