Electronic Travel Authorization for travel to the UK
April 8, 2026
In February 2026, the United Kingdom introduced an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement for travel to or through the United Kingdom.
Who needs an ETA
Most visitors travelling to the U.K. need an ETA or a visa. What you need depends on:
- your nationality
- why you’re travelling to the U.K.
You usually need an ETA rather than a visa if you’re from Canada, the U.S., Europe, Australia, or certain other countries. See who does not need to apply for an ETA.
If you’re a British dual national, you can’t apply for an ETA. See what documents you will need to hold to travel to the U.K.
It’s important to know that an ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK, but gives you permission to travel to the U.K.
To apply:
The recommendation is to apply for an ETA online at least three days before departure.
Cost and validity:
The application costs £20 GBP per person. Once approved, the ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETA.
