Aeroplan Flight Reward Policy

1. Booking window

Aeroplan Flight Reward reservations must be completed a minimum of two hours prior to flight departure, unless outlined below:

  • 48 hours prior to departure for reservations with Air Creebec and Calm Air.
  • 2. Flight Reward reservations

Flight Reward reservations may be completed free of charge at aircanada.com, or for a non-refundable CAD30 fee via the Aeroplan Contact Centre. In the instance where a Flight Reward reservation cannot be completed online, the reservation will still be subject to the Contact Centre service fee. For Flight Reward reservations which include travel on a flight operated by an airline other than Air Canada, under the Air Canada Express brand or Air Canada Rouge, a CAD39 partner booking fee will apply, per ticket.

Flight Reward reservations may include a U.S. Tax Recovery Fee. The U.S. Tax Recovery Fee is collected by Air Canada as an agent of Aeroplan to recover the cost of United States international transportation taxes applicable to certain Flight Reward itineraries.

Flight Rewards are provided by Air Canada, a partner of Aeroplan.

    3. Itineraries and points pricing - general policy

Flight Rewards may be reserved for one-way, round-trip, open-jaw, or multi-city travel.

The number of Aeroplan points required to book a Flight Reward depends on numerous factors including the itinerary, origin, destination and fare option selected.

All Flight Reward reservations are subject to approval by Aeroplan and the operating airline(s) on the itinerary

    4. Itineraries and points pricing – reservation maximums

A single Flight Reward reservation permits up to 6 flight segments per direction of travel. A reservation may have between 1 and 6 directions of travel, however the maximum number of flight segments on a single reservation is 12.

    5. Itineraries and points pricing – stopovers

Stopovers are permitted once per direction of travel, including on one-way travel. Stopovers are subject to a maximum duration of 45 days. An open-jaw is not permitted at a stopover point as travel must continue with a departure from the previous arrival city. Additional points are required for stopovers.

Stopovers are not permitted within Canada or the United States.

    6. Itineraries and points pricing – connecting times

For flight reward reservations booked via the Aeroplan Contact Centre, connecting itineraries are subject to a maximum connecting time between the arrival and departure time of two flight segments.

    • Canada/U.S. - Canada/U.S.: 4 hours, unless otherwise permitted
    • Canada/U.S. - International: 24 hours
    • International - Canada/U.S.: 24 hours
    • International to International: 24 hours

The above maximum connecting times are applicable to each individual connection, regardless of overall itinerary origin and destination.

If exceeding the maximum connecting time, a flight reward may break into two or more unique directions of travel or an Aeroplan stopover may be triggered.

    7. Itineraries and points pricing – routing validation

All Flight Reward routings are subject to final validation and approval by Aeroplan and the operating airline(s) on the itinerary.

Flight Reward itineraries built in a circuitous manner may be permitted so long as the cumulative flown distance between the origin and destination does not exceed twice the non-stop distance for a given direction of travel. Within a single direction of travel, backtracking via the same connecting airport, city or country is not permitted.

Flight Reward itineraries with a direction of travel wholly operated by Air Canada, or operated by Air Canada and Aeroplan partner airlines, may be subject to the routing rules of the equivalent retail fare.

To provide additional flexibility, certain exceptions to this policy may apply for travel between an origin and destination which are close in non-stop distance.

    7.1. Routing exception example

    MAP
      Origin Destination Pricing details
Flight segment 1 Fort St. John Vancouver

    Flight segment 2 Vancouver Edmonton
    (508 miles)
Flight segment 3 Edmonton Fort McMurray
    (240 miles)

    8. Itineraries and points pricing - travel within a zone

For connecting itineraries with an origin and destination located in a single travel zone of the Aeroplan Flight Reward chart, connecting via a third travel zone is not permitted.

To provide additional flexibility, certain limited exceptions to this policy may apply for travel between an origin and destination which border a travel zone. Air Canada’s website and mobile app, as well as Aeroplan’s Contact Centre system, will automatically apply any exceptions if valid. Otherwise, the single direction of travel will be priced as two separate rewards.

    9. Itineraries and points pricing – travel between two zones

For connecting itineraries with an origin and destination located in two different travel zones of the Aeroplan Flight Reward chart, connecting via a third zone is generally permitted if it meets the other conditions outlined in this document.

    However, the following exceptions apply:

    • North America to/from Europe: must travel across the Atlantic Ocean
    • North America to/from Middle East: must travel across the Atlantic Ocean
    • North America to/from South America: must travel wholly within the Western Hemisphere

    10. Points + Cash payment options

Multiple payment options may be offered at time of Flight Reward reservation, including fares paid wholly in points or fares using points in combination with cash. Cash amounts are quoted and charged in Canadian Dollars.

Additionally, cancellations may provide a refund of taxes, fees and charges on any unused value of travel, except for taxes and fees which are non-refundable by law.

For certain international departures, taxes, fees and charges may be collected at the departure airport.

    14. Combinability

Flights operated by any airline which participates in the Aeroplan Program may be combined on a single reservation for a Flight Reward, unless outlined below:

    • Flights operated by Air Creebec cannot be combined with flights operated by any other airline with the exception of Air Canada.
    • Flights operated by Calm Air cannot be combined with flights operated by any other airline.

    15. Waitlisting

Waitlisting Flight Rewards is not permitted.

    16. Eligible travellers

Aeroplan members can book Flight Rewards on behalf of other friends and family members. Flight Reward reservations must be made in the full legal name of the person travelling, as it appears on the passenger’s passport.

    17. Name changes

Name changes are not permitted once a Flight Reward ticket has been issued.

    18. Frequent flyer points and miles

Unless otherwise permitted, codeshare flights are not eligible for Flight Rewards.

    20. Voluntary changes

Flight Reward changes may be subject to a non-refundable fee depending on the time of the change and the fare option selected. Details on change fees can be found below.

Changes to a Flight Reward itinerary can be made at any time up to 2 hours prior to departure subject to availability.

If an Aeroplan Member cannot travel on a scheduled flight, the member must initiate a change at least 2 hours before flight departure, or the Flight Reward ticket will be forfeited. Forfeited Flight Reward tickets are no longer valid for travel or Points reinstatement.

Forfeited Flight Reward tickets are no longer valid for travel or Points reinstatement.

Changes made prior to departure, including changes made once travel has commenced, are subject to availability and may require use of additional Points, whether in whole or in combination with cash. The payment option selected at time of Flight Reward reservation cannot be modified and will be applied when making a voluntary change. For certainty:

    • A Flight Reward fare initially paid wholly in points, with applicable taxes, fees and charges paid wholly in cash, must use the same payment option when making a change.
    • A Flight Reward fare initially paid wholly in points, with applicable taxes, fees and charges paid wholly in points, must use the same payment option when making a change.
    • A Flight Reward fare initially paid using points in combination with cash must use the same rate of combination when making a change. Applicable taxes, fees and charges must continue to be paid wholly in cash.

    21. Cancellations and reward refunds

Flight Reward cancellations may be subject to a non-refundable fee depending on the fare option selected. The most restrictive cancellation fee will be assessed if a Flight Reward is reserved using multiple fare options. Details on cancellation fees can be found below.

Cancellations of a Flight Reward itinerary can be made at any time up to 2 hours prior to departure.

If an Aeroplan Member cannot travel on a scheduled flight, the member must cancel at least 2 hours before flight departure, or the Flight Reward ticket will be forfeited. Forfeited Flight Reward tickets are no longer valid for travel or Points reinstatement.

    22. Infants

Infants under the age of 2 (at time of travel) and not occupying a seat may accompany an adult travelling on a Flight Reward and will require a separate ticket for travel, subject to the below:

    • For travel wholly within Canada, no fare will apply and the infant requires a ticket.
    • For travel between Canada and the United States, no fare will apply and the infant requires a ticket.
    • For all other itineraries, a discounted fare of CAD25 or 2,500 Points will apply per direction of travel and the infant requires a ticket.

Where applicable, taxes, fees and charges will be assessed for infant travel. Only one infant under the age of 2 not occupying a seat is permitted per adult travelling. Children over the age of 2 (or turning 2 during their journey) will require their own seat and Flight Reward reservation.

If the Voucher is not eligible to be applied to the revised itinerary, the Voucher will be refunded to the Aeroplan member’s account to the extent that: (i) travel under the Flight Reward itinerary to which the Voucher was applied has not commenced; and (ii) the Voucher has not expired. In all other circumstances, the Voucher will be forfeited.
