Explore winter forests on a fat bike
Want a cool adventure? Fat biking is like mountain biking with big tires that can ride on snow. You can bike on snowy places like Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park in Brookvale, PEI. Enjoy three trails made for fat bikes: Shortbread, Buttertart, and Maple Fudge. You can also bike in the Acadian Forest at Kouchibouguac National Park, NB.
Enjoy the dazzling the northern lights
Now is the time to stop, look at the stars and marvel at the green lights–the aurora borealis. The Northwest Territories’ subarctic skies are perfect for seeing the northern lights for 240 nights a year. NorthStar Adventures in Yellowknife has fun ways to enjoy the lights, like snowmobile and teepee camp tours.
Drive a dog sled through the frozen land
Learn dog sledding in Nunavut on a qamutiq–an Inuit sled–with Inukpak Outfitting and build your own igloo. In BC, go dogsledding for a day, take the kids on a three-hour tour with huskies in Whistler, or drive your own dog sled in Thompson Country.
Stay warm and fish under the ice
Try ice fishing this winter. Look for fishing shacks on the ice or ask locals for the best spots in Saskatchewan. Rent a warm hut and fish for big walleyes, pikes, and perches. In Alberta, go to Sturgeon, Bear, or Snipe lakes near Grande Prairie. Or take a guided trip with sonar and cameras near Canmore or Kananaskis Country.
Ski along the scenic trails
Cross-country skiing is a great way to enjoy nature and history. In Saskatchewan, ski along trails that pass-through forests and lakes in Moose Mountain Provincial Park. In Québec, ski on the Valcartier military base near Québec City and learn about its past. In Ontario, ski at Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve and admire its unique landscape.
Snowshoe to secluded huts on quiet trails
Snowshoeing is a fun way to explore winter landscapes. In Newfoundland and Labrador, you can snowshoe by Muskrat Pond, warm up in a chalet, see the stars and moon at night, and learn about Indigenous culture on a guided tour and a campfire. In Nova Scotia, you can find easy snowshoe trails on Cape Breton Island and enjoy the nature.
Skate on ice with cranberries below
Enjoy the freedom of ice skating outdoors under a clear sky. In Ontario, skate on the Rideau Canal Skateway or try the Ice Trail at Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery. There, you can skate on frozen cranberries, see waterfalls, and admire 400 tiki torches at night. In Manitoba, skate on a large ice area at Paint Lake Provincial and enjoy warming shelters and rustic bathrooms.
Take a snowmobile tour
Snowmobiling is a thrilling way to experience winter. In New Brunswick, you can ride on the Fundy Highlands trail system or try the Northern New Brunswick Odyssey. In British Columbia, you can follow the Gold Rush Snowmobile, a historic trail between 70 Mile House and Horsefly.
