Acquisition News

Learn more about how Air Canada’s acquisition of the Aeroplan program will affect me.

Why were you part of this deal to buy Aeroplan?
Since our announcement in May 2017, Air Canada has heard from thousands of customers that, in addition to expecting a better loyalty program, they would prefer to transfer their Aeroplan Miles to the new Air Canada loyalty program. We’re investing in this deal so that we can deliver exactly that. If successfully concluded, the deal will allow for customers’ Aeroplan Miles to transfer into the new Air Canada loyalty program in 2020.
Why did these companies want to buy Aeroplan?
Air Canada, TD Bank, CIBC and Visa Canada are Aeroplan’s largest partners, and many of our own customers are also Aeroplan members. We all have a vested interest in the stability of the Aeroplan Program, and believe our customers will all benefit from this transaction.
I'm hearing a lot about changes to Aeroplan – what do they mean for me?
Aeroplan recently announced details of planned changes to their program coming in July 2020. For now, though, it’s business as usual. You can continue to earn and redeem Aeroplan Miles for travel with Air Canada and our Star Alliance partners through June 2020. Similarly, Air Canada Altitude members can continue to enjoy their exclusive travel privileges.
Will Air Canada still launch a new program in 2020, or are you keeping Aeroplan?
Air Canada remains committed to delivering on our promise to build a new loyalty program that better reflects the way our customers live and travel. What’s more, if the deal is successfully concluded, customers’ Aeroplan Miles will be transferable into the new Air Canada loyalty program when it launches in 2020.
What happens now that Aimia has accepted Air Canada’s offer to acquire the Aeroplan Program?
Air Canada is building a new, best-in-class loyalty program that will deliver the responsive, flexible and integrated service our customers want. That program remains on track to launch in 2020. What’s more, if the deal is successfully concluded, customers’ Aeroplan Miles will be transferable into the new Air Canada loyalty program when it launches in 2020.
Concerned that Air Canada owned Aeroplan, sold it and now is starting its own loyalty program again. Is this encouraging customer loyalty? Stuart R.
Great question, Stuart. For background, Air Canada sold its final stake in Aeroplan almost 10 years ago to Aimia, and when we did, it enabled us to strengthen our airline during a very difficult time. It helped us initiate the transformation that resulted with the Air Canada you know today. Over the years, for nearly a decade, Aimia has been a great partner and we are very grateful for everything they do for us and for our customers. Looking to our future, however, it is clear that Air Canada needs more than just a way for its customers to earn and burn miles. We also need to own our relationship with you – which involves creating more personalized interactions, compelling rewards, and making our end-to-end customer experience as seamless as possible. That is the promise of our new program, and we know that if we do it right, we will encourage loyalty in ways we previously never imagined.

Our New Loyalty Program

Learn more about the plans for the new Air Canada Loyalty Program.

Doesn’t Air Canada own Aeroplan?
No. The Aeroplan program is fully owned and operated by Aimia, a separate, independent company. Air Canada created Aeroplan in 1984 but sold its last shares in Aimia (formerly Groupe Aeroplan) in 2008.
Will my account in the new Air Canada program be set up automatically if I do nothing?
There’s no action required from you right now. If you are already an Aeroplan member, your enrolment in the new Air Canada program will be easy. Approximately 12 months prior to launch (mid-2019) we will begin communicating the key specifics, including instructions to set up your account.

We do not anticipate any near-term changes as a result of our announcement, and the agreement we have in place with Aeroplan through June 2020 remains unchanged. That said, Aimia has the right to make adjustments to Aeroplan Reward pricing, and they have made changes from time to time in response to market conditions. Aeroplan always provides advance customer notice for such changes.
