Beijing Rises (and Shines)

THIS MONTH: Beijing

Blue Mountains, Australia

Where? Suite 6513 on the fifth floor of Raffles Beijing Hotel, which opened in 1904 as the Grand Hôtel de Pékin.

What? From your four-poster bed with gauze canopy curtains, you can see down East Chang An Avenue.

Why? The hotel is only three blocks from Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City (a great place for a pre-breakfast jog).

The WOWfactor: This hotel speaks to both the past – with its glistening lobby, 10 sparkling chandeliers and sweeping 24-step marble staircase, complete with harpist and violinist – and the present: a modern lounge bar, which seems to float in an open atrium.
