Canada’s best new restaurants
In the November issue of enRoute, Toronto food-journalist Chris Johns visits 57 new eateries from coast to coast — and selects the top ten:
1. Brontë
Ultramodern, exquisitely presented food avoids becoming esoteric by offering big, bold gestures, like superfresh soft-shell crab paired with an immaculate celery root remoulade, young watercress and chorizo. A triumph.
Le Meridien Versailles, 1800, rue Sherbrooke O., Montréal, 514-934-1801
2. Restaurant L’Utopie
A group of cutting-edge, first-time restaurateurs pair exquisite cuisine with masterly selected wines to create a sublime prix fixe menu.
226 1/2, rue Saint-Joseph E., Québec, 418-523-7878
3. Cru Restaurant
Run by a husband-and-wife team, this adorable bistro offers grilled local asparagus with lemon mascarpone cream and vino cotto, syrah-braised beef short ribs, and a host of other wine-friendly delights.
1459 W. Broadway, Vancouver, 604-677-4111,

4. Perigee
No menu, just your choice of the day’s five-, six- or seven-course meal — personally served by chef Pat Riley.
55 Mill St., Toronto, 416-364-1397,

5. Arbutus Grille & Wine Bar
Spectacular food in a spectacular natural setting, with an emphasis on local, regional and seasonal tastes.
Brentwood Bay Lodge & Spa, 849 Verdier Ave., Brentwood Bay, B.C.

6. Feenie’s
Forgoing the hushed, reverential ambiance of his more formal Lumière, chef Rob Feenie goes deliciously downscale with seemingly frivolous dishes prepared with consummate skill and an obvious respect for ingredients.
2563 W. Broadway, Vancouver, 604-739-7115,
www.feenies.com
7. Aix Cuisine Du Terroir
Discreetly located, celebrity chef Jannick Bouchard’s subdued room is home to elevated peasant dishes, such as a pan-fried crispy pork shank with homemade relish and dandelion vinaigrette.
Hôtel Place d’Armes, 711, côte de la Place-d’Armes, Montréal
1-888-450-1887,
www.aixcuisine.com
8. Aurora Bistro
Local products, including an all-B.C. wine list, shine in this retro-futuristic bistro.
2420 Main St., Vancouver, 604-873-9944,
www.aurorabistro.ca
9. Bu
This nonchalant wine bar attracts off-duty chefs with its serious cooking, and an outstanding and ever-changing selection of 30 wines available.
5245, boul. Saint-Laurent, Montréal, 514-276-0249,
www.bu-mtl.com
10. Jane’s On The Common
Mixing a respect for local seafood traditions with sophisticated updates, this is the glorified diner we should all be so lucky to have in our own neighbourhood.
