Idyllic Zurich

THIS MONTH: Zurich

Blue Mountains, Australia

WHERE? The Dolder Grand, Zurich, Switzerland

WHAT? Set amid a postcard alpine scene, this traditional luxury property comes complete with a glistening azure lake, green pastures and the spires of a historic city in the distance. Fresh mountain air wafts in through the rooms’ open windows, drawing in the beautiful outdoors.

WHY? The main structure was built in 1899, but 2008 saw the construction of two new curving Norman Foster-designed wings. In keeping with this modern transformation, 75 percent of the building’s energy is produced by an impressive geothermal heat-extraction system that uses 70 tubes sunk a staggering 137 metres into the surrounding slopes.

The WOW factor: Designer Klafs Saunabau’s 25-metre-long indoor pool, cantilevered over the steep terrain, looks out over the lush grounds. Afterward, take a dip in the outdoor hot tub while relaxing with the sound of distant cowbells.
