Air Canada offers golfers tips for worry-free air travel

With golf enthusiasts preparing to drive, chip and putt their way around courses, Air Canada has some useful travel tips to ensure traveling with golf clubs is as enjoyable as the game itself.

Save money for green fees by avoiding excess baggage fees

It’s important to pack your golf gear appropriately. Ever wonder why your golf bag seems to get heavier as you carry it down the last few fairways – and then wonder how much it actually weighs? We have no easy answer to the first question, however, we do recommend that you check the weight of your golf bag before leaving home to avoid a surprise at the airport

Air Canada and Air Canada Jazz, its regional carrier, allow each customer a free checked baggage allowance of one or two pieces of luggage that individually weigh no more than 23 kilos (50 pounds). The overall measurement of each piece (length + width + height) must be less than 158 centimetres (62 inches).

A golf bag may be substituted for one free checked baggage allowance piece. When a golf bag is checked as baggage over and above this two-piece allowance, additional charges will be levied at the airport. Air Canada’s new North America flat rate excess baggage fee is $105 CAD/USD. A customer traveling on an international flight with a golf bag in excess of the free baggage allowance is subject to excess baggage fee of $175 CAD/USD.

Pack only what you would carry on the course

Air Canada strongly recommends limiting golf bag contents to the following:

Maximum 14 clubs
Maximum 12 balls
1 pair of golf shoes

Protect your clubs with more than head covers

Air Canada recommends that golf bags be fully enclosed in a hard outer cover specifically designed for shipping to avoid damage. Air Canada cannot assume responsibility for any damage to improperly covered golf clubs that may be incurred during travel.

Your favorite club and certain other accessories must be checked

Due to enhanced security measures, customers are no longer permitted to carry a favorite golf club on-board; all golf clubs should be packed for carriage in the baggage compartment of the aircraft. Golf tees and ball mark repair tools should also be packed in checked luggage as sharp, pointed objects are not allowed in carry-on baggage.
