Getting to know the program
A) First six months: Your front line assignment
1. How many candidates will you be selecting for this program?
We will be reviewing our needs for our fall 2007 campaign.
2. What is the start date?
We are planning in the first quarter of 2007.
3. You mentioned we would be working on the front line . . . what does that mean and what areas are available?
This means that you will be working in operational areas that interface directly with the customer such as In Flight (working as gate support during boarding processes) and Airports as a customer service agent. There will also be several positions within Headquarters.
4. Do I get my choice or how will you decide who goes where?
Assignments to areas will be matched with your strengths - what is deemed to best suit your capabilities and interests.
5. How long is the training for these positions?
In Flight - 4 weeks in class. Airports - 3 weeks in class, plus 1 week on the job training. All training will take place in Montreal.
6. Who pays for the training and will I have to cover the costs for my stay in Montreal?
The company will pay for the training which is remunerated. For those individuals who are from out of town; hotel and meal expenses will be covered. The expense policy will be provided at time of hire.
7. Will I have to work shifts? And if so can I choose my shifts and will these shift change?
During your front line assignment shift work will most likely be required. Typically, this includes early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays. When you are in your frontline role, work rules will be in accordance with current collective agreements (seniority etc). When you are working in your corporate role, while there is no shift work, there will be some serious time commitments.
8. Will my co-workers know that I am part of this AC Graduate program?
Senior management will be following your progress, as the purpose of this program is to bring new talent on board. It will not be evident to your front line colleagues. As in any new business relationship it is your responsibility to find ways to demonstrate teamwork and leadership capabilities without ostracizing yourself. Be aware of when it is inappropriate to discuss and share sensitive information and act with integrity.
9. Is there a single person I report to for the duration of the program?
No, you will report into each manager you have during the 18 months (i.e.; Trainer, front line CSM, reporting manager).
B) Starting your corporate role
10. When my front line assignment is complete, how will I be placed? Do I get to choose what I want or how will the decision's be made?
We will try to align preferences with business needs and related areas of discipline or specialization. For example, if you have studied in Human Resources or Industrial, you will be assigned to the Employee Rations Branch.
11. Do I stay in the same corporate role for the entire program? What if I decide I would prefer another area?
The organization's intent is to develop strong management generalists. During the time in your corporate role, you will be given assignments that allow you to progress and we will certainly consider individual preferences and interests to make for best fit.
12. At the end of my 18 months program do I stay in my current management role or will I be given a new position?
You may be put into a position to stretch your boundaries or you may be given projects to work on, dependant on your performance during the 18 months and the business requirements of the company.
13. When I know my end state position? Will I have an opportunity in determining what it is?
Throughout the terms of your program, there will be opportunities through performance feedback and coaching, to help explore where your strengths and development opportunities are. There are No promises ONLY opportunities. Our business is dynamic, it's up to you.
